Drawing on books

Drawing on her prodigious talent with a pencil, in 2017 France Bizot also started a series of drawings on books she collects, on display for the very first time in the exhibition Shift and Shuffle at Backslash (2019). Each book is carrefully chosen for its cover and title, then the artist’s imagination creates images, often with a hint of humour, relating to the stories behind the stories. A portrait of a young David Bowie appears on a biography of Lord Byron ; a prime piece of beef illustrates an essay on pornography ; a sleeping pill decorates a book on imaginary memories ; Wim Wenders’s “winged” Bruno Ganz seems to want to throw himself onto Sophocle, and Booba is showing off his pecs on Les vigiles de l’esprit by the philosopher Alain. Some of the books are adorned with more drawings on different pages. And it’s not unusual to come across reinterpretations and embellishments of previously printed images.

Virtuose du crayon, France Bizot a commencé en 2017 une série de dessins sur des livres qu’elle collecte et qui sont présentés pour la première fois lors de l’exposition Shift and Shuffle chez Backslash (2019). Chaque ouvrage est mûrement choisi pour sa couverture et son titre puis l’imagination de l’artiste crée des images, souvent teintées d’humour, en rapport avec les histoires de ces écrits.
Ainsi un portrait du jeune David Bowie se déploie sur une biographie de Lord Byron ; une magistrale côte de boeuf illustre désormais un essai sur la pornographie ; un cachet de somnifère décore un ouvrage sur les souvenirs imaginaires ; le Bruno Ganz “ailé” de Wim Wenders semble vouloir se jeter sur Sophocle ; Booba développe ses pectoraux sur Les vigiles de l’esprit du philosophe Alain ; etc. Certains livres sont agrémentés d’autres dessins au fil des pages. Et il n’est pas rare de tomber sur des réinterprétations et agréments d’images déjà imprimées.
