Backslash is pleased to welcome French artist Nicolas Boulben for a solo exhibition entitled Trapping and Framing. This series of recent small-scale paintings, a format inseparable from his artistic practice, explores the profound connections between painting and urban planning. His architectural perspective, shaped by his parallel career as an architect, does more than inform his imagination: it gives material form to his painting, as Boulben often sources the materials for his distinctive works from sites near construction projects.

With Trapping and Framing, the artist offers a painterly exploration of the urban landscape through architectural fragments and everyday elements that often go unnoticed. Informed by his dual practice as a painter and architect, his approach examines notions of framing, constraint and perception. The title conveys the tension between framing, which structures both the gaze and the composition, and trapping, which evokes confnement and capture. The pared-back compositions reveal a singular vision of the city, in which built structures become the subjects of a quiet painting marked by restraint and contemplation. The absence of human fgures invites viewers to look closely at the places depicted. Like miniature portraits, each fragment of the city acquires a distinct presence, becoming the subject of the composition in its own right.

Through the notion of framing, Boulben turns a discerning eye to the ordinary details of the urban landscape, transforming them into distinctive pictorial subjects. The frames he designs for each work play an integral role in the composition, bringing attention to humble materials, often salvaged or reclaimed. Through the notion of trapping, he explores the ambivalence of urban structures, which conceal as much as they reveal. His frontal, pared-back compositions isolate and condense their subjects, turning each painting into a fragment of the city captured within its own frame.
As Boulben explains: “The human presence disappears, but something remains in the place depicted. Here, it is almost as though the fragment of the city itself becomes the subject of the portrait.”
