Playing Players. This relatively untranslatable polyptoton refers both to players in the process of playing and players caught at their own game […]. Gregory Forstner and Duncan Wylie have decided to play a joint game at the Espace Vallès, placing their exhibition under the banner of artistic jousting. This face-off highlights their artistic complicity. The pictorial and societal issues at stake in their respective painting practices respond to each other, whilst simultaneously fitting into a wider history of painting.

Matching (brush) stroke for stroke, the artists have set themselves the challenge of a visual ping-pong match, far from their first attempt. The first round took place in 2009 with their exhibitions The Ship of Fools (Gregory Forstner) and Open House (Duncan Wylie), organised simultaneously by Guy Tosatto at the Musée des Beaux-arts in Grenoble, signalling their institutional recognition and their positioning as young French painters in the face of a particularly dynamic German scene. Fifteen years on, Duncan Wylie and Gregory Forstner are once again pitted against each other on the gallery walls; from the same generation and exploring the same medium, each of their practices illuminates that of the other. As with any game, the spirit of this exhibition is both playful and serious.

Playing Players. Assez intraduisible, cette polyptote désigne à la fois des joueurs en train de jouer et des joueurs pris à leur propre jeu […]. Gregory Forstner et Duncan Wylie ont ainsi décidé de jouer une partie commune au sein de l’espace Vallès en plaçant leur exposition sous le signe de la joute artistique. Ce face à face rend évidente leur connivence artistique. Les enjeux tant picturaux que sociétaux de leurs pratiques respectives de peintre se répondent ainsi, tout en s’inscrivant dans une histoire de la peinture plus vaste.

Rendant coup (de pinceau) pour coup, les artistes se lancent ainsi le défi d’un ping-pong visuel qui n’en est pas à son coup d’essai. La première manche a eu lieu en 2009 avec leurs expositions The Ship of Fools (Gregory Forstner) et Open House (Duncan Wylie) organisées simultanément par Guy Tosatto au musée des Beaux-arts de Grenoble, signant leur reconnaissance institutionnelle et leur positionnement de jeunes peintres français face à une scène allemande particulièrement dynamique. Quinze ans après, Duncan Wylie et Gregory Forstner se mesurent donc de nouveau l’un à l’autre sur les cimaises ; de la même génération et explorant le même médium, chacune de leur pratique éclaire celle de l’autre. Comme dans tout jeu, l’esprit de cette exposition relève à la fois d’une certaine forme de ludique et d’un grand sérieux.
